The President's Message: April 2012

See you in a few weeks! Here's what to expect:

Congratulations, Carlos Guzman!

Carlos was named the recipient of the prestigious Association of Free Community Papers (AFCP) Distinguished Service Award at the recent conference in Atlanta. (See related article.)

Carlos has served the Community Papers of Florida (CPF) well for a number of years, but he hasn't stopped there. He has also served AFCP and the free paper industry. His volunteer work and leadership are greatly appreciated.

We also want to thank Rhonda Hillier for her years of service to this association and to the board of directors. Rhonda served as president in 1998-1999. This month, she resigned from the board. (See related article.)

The agenda for the CPF conference in Stuart is set (and attached below). We are looking forward to having you attend, and hope that you will take advantage of all the training programs and entertainment that you and your team members have in store.

The opening session Friday is for managers. Guzman will provide information on a program that TheFlyer.com is using, "Work from Anywhere: How to establish and manage lead sales reps who are remote capitalizing on technological innovation."

The opening session Friday at 2:30 p.m. is, "Restoring excellence in customer service in the face of challenging times." The panel presenting this seminar includes Tom Adams, Justo Rey, Rob Zarrilli and myself.

No conference would be complete without an open mike session. This will follow the opening session and be moderated by Peter Lamb.

We have a special reception planned on the Riverwalk in Downtown Stuart. In addition to music, food and live entertainment, we have arranged for the "Awards for Excellence" awards video to be presented at this reception. Transportation will be provided.

The opening session Saturday at 9:30 a.m. includes a Classified Network Training session by Pat Snyder of Hometown News, and a Social Media Classified Session by Lisa del Monte of TheFlyer.com. Breakout sessions on Saturday include a CVC update by Tim Bingaman, president of the auditing firm, and a Co-op seminar by Tammy Ramp of Multi-Ad.

Since the "Awards for Excellence" awards video is being shown on Friday evening, we will follow lunch on Saturday with the presentation of the awards plaques to the deserving winners and a photo op session.

The Dean of The Leadership Institute, Rob Zarrilli, will kick off the Saturday afternoon session with a popular TLI class, "Customer Retention Strategies That Work."

It has been a few years since we have held a Three Minute Idea Fair. Here is your chance to win some money by sharing your money-making ideas. Gary Hawken, former CPF president and board member, is back to do what he has done for years - moderate this session.

We can look forward to another great conclusion to the CPF conference - the Kentucky Derby Reception. You can bet that all eyes will be on the screen to determine if they picked up some cash during this famous event. And if you don't already know how to play our "Win-Place-Show" game, download the flyer below.

This will be my last conference as president of this association. During these tough economic times we have dug into our rainy day reserves and continued to provide great benefits for members of this association. We can't thank the network classified reps enough for their efforts to keep CPF pointed in the right direction.

Through both the good and the difficult times, it has been an honor to serve this membership. What we learn and share and the friends we make is invaluable. Thanks to the support of a dedicated board of directors and the CPF staff, this has been a great two years.

At this conference, it will be my honor to pass the gavel to Justo Rey, president of the Forum Publishing Group in Southeast Florida. I have worked with Justo for some time and respect his knowledge of the industry and his devotion to this association.

We will be in good hands.
