Looking Back at 2012 and Forward to 2013

The highlight of CPF's 2012 year ... our annual Community Papers of Florida (CPF) conference at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina the first weekend in May.

We crammed a lot of learning, fun and relationship building into three action-packed days. The beautiful ladies dazzled us with their Kentucky Derby hats; and we provided the attending members with great training sessions, entertainment, food and the opportunity to meet and mingle with peers. We held a fun welcome reception at the Lyric Flagler Center on Stuart's famous River Walk, had the annual "Awards for Excellence" ceremony and brought back Gary Hawken for a Three Minute Idea Fair. All in all, the conference was a great benefit to those who were able to attend.

During the year we honored Pat Snyder of Hometown News with the annual Terry Hisken Telemarketing Excellence Award for her contribution to the CPF classified network. TheFlyer.com President, Carlos Guzman, received the Association of Free Community Papers (AFCP) Distinguished Service Award. We also honored the top sellers and managers for the points they earned in the CPF classified network contest, for which the board of directors had approved $20,000 in prize money.

During the year we welcomed Susan Griffin, publisher of the Ponte Vedra Recorder, to the board of directors. Resigning from the board were Rhonda Hillier, publisher of The Advertiser in Panama City, and Clarissa Williams, publisher of The Pennysaver Group in Dayton Beach. Rhonda served on the board for over 20 years and remains active in the association. Clarissa resigned from the board to accept a new position in the Northeast.

On a sad note, we lost two great CPF family members. Judy Marcum Mandt left us on August 24. In 1977 she co-founded The Flyer magazine in Miami with her husband, Dick, and together they built an advertising juggernaut which thrives to this day. Bill Sharpe was found dead in his office on April 12. Bill was the owner and publisher of Tampa Marketing Co., which distributed several papers in the Tampa market.

Now we are looking forward to 2013. The board of directors has selected the Caribe Royale Resort located three miles from Disney World for this annual conference. The Caribe Royale is a world-class facility - DO mark your calendar to join us May 3-4 for a fantastic CPF event. Each room is a suite so there is room to bring your family along.

The conference committee is working on finalizing the agenda. The target is to have a "Sales Boot Camp" during the Saturday session. This session will be geared for all members that attend, including managers, sales managers, sales reps and classified personnel. Sales is the name of the game and we want to continue honing our craft. By attending the conference you will be up to date on the latest sales techniques.

During times when the association is struggling for classified revenue, the best way you can help CPF is to get your classified personnel involved in selling network ads. The CPF office has material to help you in that endeavor, which will benefit both CPF and your bottom line.

Let's make 2013 a great year.
